Société de l'Histoire de France

The Société de l’Histoire de France was established in 1833 by François Guizot to promote the renewal of scholarship fuelled by the widespread interest in national history typical of the Romantic period. Many leading French historians of the 19th and 20th centuries have been elected to its annual presidency, and members have contributed a vast quantity of critical editions of texts and documents, mainly chronicles, memoirs, and letters. Initially limited to the period before 1789, the Société de l’Histoire de France later absorbed the Société d’histoire contemporaine (1927). The Société’s series of texts and its Annuaire-Bulletin constitute a library of more than 500 volumes. The Société gathers twice yearly for lectures on historical subjects and, on occasion, holds conferences for wider audiences.
